First Sermon:
All praise is due and belongs to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help and forgiveness and repent to Him. We seek refuge with Allah from the evils of ourselves and from the wickedness of our own deeds. Whomever that Allah guides, none can mislead him, and whomever He sends astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah alone with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
(O ye who believe, fear Allah as he should be feared and die not unless you are Muslims) [Al-Imran: 102]
(O people fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul. From it, He created its spouse, and from both of them scattered many men and women. Fear Allah, by whom you ask one another, and (fear) the wombs (lest you sever its relationship). Allah is ever watching over you.) [An-Nisa: 1].
(O you, who believe, fear Allah and say sound statements. He will mend your deeds for you and forgive your sins. Whosoever obeys Allah and His Messenger shall win a great victory) [Al-Ahzab: 70-71].
O Mankind! Fear Allah, and know that sincere devotion to Allah in words, deeds and purposes means that a person's intention should be nothing but to seek the countenance of Almighty Allah. In intention is of extreme importance; as it is a condition for accepting deeds. Allah does not accept any deed from His slaves except that, which is sound and exclusively devoted to Him. That which is not sound nor purely devoted to Him will not reach to Him and He will not reward for it. Allah, the most High says,
And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship none but Him Alone [Al-Bayyinah: 5]
Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated on the authority of 'Umar bin al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (May the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) say: " Actions are but by intentions, and each person will have but that which he intended ".
Therefore, devote your deeds purely to Allah so that He would accept them from you and reward you.
Brothers in Islam: There are certain purposes of intention: one: distinction between acts of worship and habits, such as distinguishing between bathing for major impurity (Al-Janabah) and bathing for the purpose of cooling and cleaning oneself. In addition, to distinguish some acts of worship from others, such as distinguishing Dhuhr (noon) prayer for the Asr prayer, and distinguishing the fasting of Ramadan from other kinds of fast, and to distinguish the object for which a deed is intended, is it for Allah alone, or for Allah and other objects. Such is the point of concern and the focus of happiness and misery, and reward and punishment.
When one contemplates over people's condition today, he finds that they vary in dedications and deeds, between those who prefer this world, and have dedicated everything to it. Their hearts are rest assured by it and its ephemeral bliss to the extent that they have even been attached to it and forgotten the threat of Allah and His promise, and the believers who prefer the eternal bliss at the sight of Allah. Thus, they work righteousness, leave bad deeds, devote themselves sincerely to their Lord, and are aware of the reality of life. Allah says:
(Whoever wishes for the quick-passing (transitory enjoyment of this world), We readily grant him what We will for whom We like. Then, afterwards, We have appointed for him Hell, he will burn therein disgraced and rejected.
19. And whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it, with the necessary effort due for it (i.e. do righteous deeds of Allah's Obedience) while he is a believer (in the Oneness of Allah Islamic Monotheism), then such are the ones whose striving shall be appreciated, thanked and rewarded (by Allah)) [Al-Isra: 18.19],
"The Almighty informs that it is not everyone that demands for this world and its bliss that achieves it, but whatever Allah wills is achieved by those whom He wished. Likewise, anyone who wants the hereafter and its bliss and happiness, and strives for that he will earn it by the grace of his Lord and Master" (Ibn Kathir).
Some learned scholars said, they excelled by sincere devotion and intentions. They did not excel by profound worship or immigration or sacrifices. Imam Muslim narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah, May Allah be pleased with him, who said: I heard the Prophet (May the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), say: ((The first of people against whom judgment will be pronounced on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who died a martyr. He will be brought and Allah will make His favours known to him and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I fought for you until I died a martyr. He will say: You have lied - you did but fight that it might be said [of you]: He is courageous. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. [Another] will be a man who has studied [religious] knowledge and has taught it and who used to recite the Qur'an. He will be brought and Allah will make His favours known to him and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I studied [religious] knowledge and I taught it and I recited the Quran for Your sake. He will say: You have lied - you did but study [religious] knowledge that it might be said [of you]: He is learned. And you recited the Quran that it might be said [of you]: He is a reciter. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire. [Another] will be a man whom Allah had made rich and to whom He had given all kinds of wealth. He will be brought and Allah will make His favours known to him and he will recognize them. [The Almighty] will say: And what did you do about them? He will say: I left no path [untrodden] in which You like money to be spent without spending in it for Your sake. He will say: You have lied - you did but do so that it might be said [of you]: He is open-handed. And so it was said. Then he will be ordered to be dragged along on his face until he is cast into Hell-fire)).
Slaves of Allah: Deed not intended for Allah is of various categories. Imam Ibn Rajab, May Allah bestow mercy upon him, said what can be summarized as follows: Realize that deed not intended for Allah is of various categories:
-It is at times pure hypocrisy whereby it is not intended but for the purpose of priggishism to creatures, for a worldly purpose, like the hypocrites in their prayers. Allah, the most High, says:
﴿ وَإِذَا قَامُواْ إِلَى الصَّلاَةِ قَامُواْ كُسَالَى يُرَآؤُونَ النَّاسَ وَلاَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللّهَ إِلاَّ قَلِيلاً ﴾
(When they stand up to pray, they stand up lazily, showing off to the people and do not remember Allah, except a little) [An-Nisa: 142],
In a like manner did Allah described the infidels with pure hypocrisy, saying:
﴿ وَلاَ تَكُونُواْ كَالَّذِينَ خَرَجُواْ مِن دِيَارِهِم بَطَرًا وَرِئَاء النَّاسِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ اللّهِ وَاللّهُ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ مُحِيطٌ ﴾
(Do not be like those who left their homes elated with insolence and showing off to people, barring others from the Path of Allah but Allah encompasses what they do) [Al-Anfal: 47].
"This is an offer from Allah, the Exalted, to those who believe in Him and His Messenger not to act but exclusively for Allah, asking from Him without show off as the people of the idolaters did in their match to Badr for show off". (At-Tabari).
-Sometimes, the deeds are meant for the sake of Allah but accompanied by hypocrisy. If hypocrisy accompanies it from its basis, the sound texts indicate invalidation and annulment of such deed. Nevertheless, if the deed was initially meant for Allah and then undergone the intention of showing off, which occurred to his mind but he avoided it that will not harm him without contention.
Slaves of Allah! Keeping one's deeds secret between himself and his Lord is likely to bring about sincerity and further from hypocrisy. Allah, the most High, said:
﴿ إِن تُبْدُواْ الصَّدَقَاتِ فَنِعِمَّا هِيَ وَإِن تُخْفُوهَا وَتُؤْتُوهَا الْفُقَرَاء فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ لُّكُمْ وَيُكَفِّرُ عَنكُم مِّن سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ وَاللّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ ﴾
(If you disclose your Sadaqat (alms giving), it is well, but if you conceal it, and give it to the poor, that is better for you. (Allah) will forgive you some of your sins. And Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do) [Al-Baqarah: 271 ].
This verse indicates that concealing charity is better than displaying it; for it is far from showing off, except if there is preponderant interest in displaying it like for people to emulate the act. It is narrated in Sahih Al-Bukhari that the Messenger of Allah (May the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), mentioned among the seven people whom Allah will shade under His shade on the day when there will be no shade except His.... “And a man who gives charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given".
This is what I say, and I ask forgiveness from Allah Almighty for you, me, and other Muslims from every sin. So ask for His forgiveness for He is the All-Forgiving, the All-Merciful.
Second Sermon:
All praise is due and belongs to Allah alone. May the blessings and peace of Allah be upon the last Prophet.
Slaves of Allah: If we look at the case of the prophets of Allah, his patrons, and chosen people, we will know the reality of their devotion to Allah in their actions and words, which made them to attain high grades and lofty abodes. Consider Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him) when the wife of the King of Egypt sought to seduce him (to do an evil act), but he refused and feared the status of His Lord. Nothing prevented him besides that. Allah says:
(And indeed she did desire him and he would have inclined to her desire, had he not seen the evidence of his Lord. Thus it was, that We might turn away from him evil and illegal sexual intercourse. Surely, he was one of Our chosen, guided slaves.) [Yusuf: 24].
Moreover, Allah the Almighty described His prophet Musa, peace be upon him, saying:
﴿ وَاذْكُرْ فِي الْكِتَابِ مُوسَى إِنَّهُ كَانَ مُخْلَصًا وَكَانَ رَسُولًا نَّبِيًّا ﴾
(And mention in the Book (this Qur'an) Musa (Moses). Verily! He was chosen and he was a Messenger (and) a Prophet) [Maryam: 51].
The Quranic verses and prophetic traditions on the sincere devotion of those pious and chosen people are ample. Blessed are those who track their path and follow their footsteps.
Abu Suleiman says: "Blessed is he who has one sound step, by which he does not intend but Allah.
Some rightly guided predecessors said: Anyone who has one single sound moment which is purely devoted to Allah will be saved".
A man said to Tamim Ad-Dari, may Allah be pleased with him: "What is your prayer at night? He got very angry and then said Allah indeed one single rak'ah I offer in the dead of the night in secret is dearer to me than to pray the whole night and then telling people".
Invoke peace and blessings of Allah the Almighty upon whom He has commanded you when He said,
Allah sends His Salat (Graces, Honours, Blessings, Mercy, etc.) on the Prophet (Muhammad) and also His angels too (ask Allah to bless and forgive him). O you who believe! Send your Salat on (ask Allah to bless) him (Muhammad), and (you should) greet (salute) him with the Islamic way of greeting [Al-Ahzab: 56].
