I can say vocally that one of the simplest things I have ever known in life is becoming a Muslim. It is a simple and easy process to become a Muslim. All you have to do is to say a sentence called "The Testimony of Faith" (Kalimat ash-Shahada), which is pronounced as:
"Ashhadu an La ilaha illa Allah, wa anna Muhammadan rasoolu Allah.¨
These Arabic words mean, “I testify that there is no true god (deity) worthy of worship but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.”
Once a person proclaims the Testimony of Faith (Shahada) with conviction and understanding of its meaning, he/she has become a Muslim.
The first part, “There is no true god (deity) worthy of worship” means that none has the right to be worshipped but God Alone, and that God has neither partner nor son. The second part means that Muhammad was a true Messenger and Prophet sent by God to mankind.
To be a Muslim, one should also:
* Believe Allah as One and Only God (Shahadah).
* Believe in the angels of Allah.
* Believe in all the Prophets (PBUT) sent by Allah to mankind.
* Believe in all the Books sent with the Prophet of Allah.
* Believe that the Judgment Day (Resurrection Day) is true and will come.
* Believe in predestination both the bad and good.
This internal belief is the bedrock of being a Muslim. In any case, there can never be a house without pillars and many other complementing appendages that make it a complete and wholesome building with whatever architectural and bother beautiful touches it may have. For Islam, a true Muslim does not just say he believes with the mind and remain the same like one who is yet to be a Muslim. Therefore, one has to get along with the first and greatest pillar mentioned above (i.e. Shahadah) the other four pillars, which are:
Observing five compulsory daily prayers.
Giving the compulsory zakat.
Fasting the compulsory month of Ramadan.
Going for hajj once in one's lifetime, if capable.
The reversion can be done alone, you do not require a big congregation or the presence of a prominent scholar or Sheikh to announce your new decision. Nonetheless, it is very important to let some people know at least. This is because, if one dies, since none knows when the time will come, witnesses can come out to stand up for him in order to be buried as a Muslim. Other instances apart from death where religious status is required may also make letting people know about your being a Muslim a necessary fact.
After the said belief and faith declaration, it is also very important that one takes a ritual bath to be a kind of purification to the outer body after already purifying the soul by the testimony of Islam.
Benefits of Reverting to Islam
There are many benefits of reverting to Islam. Some of them are:
• One forms a personal and direct relationship with God by worshipping Him Alone, without the need of intermediaries. One feels this personal relationship and is aware that God knows everything and is there to assist him/her. You no more need to tell your personal secrets to anyone in whatever disguise before you are forgiven. Just get a seclusion for yourself and sincerely tell God your Creator all you need of Him.
• A person realizes the true purpose of his or her life, which is to recognize God and follow His commandments, knowing that He Alone will reward you or punish you for all you do openly or secretly.
• One finds internal true happiness, tranquility, and inner peace. No matter the situation he may find himself, he will always find an internal overwhelming solace in Allah and His recompenses in which He will never fail.
• Upon converting to Islam, all of one’s previous sins are forgiven, and one starts a new life of piety and righteousness. And as a Muslim, when one makes a mistake thereafter, he/she can always repent to God Who forgives the sins of those who repent to Him sincerely. There are no intermediaries or created beings to make confessions to.
• One will be granted salvation from Hellfire, which all prophets have warned against.
• The greatest benefit is that a Muslim is promised by God the reward of eternal Paradise (Heaven). Those who are blessed with Paradise, will live eternally in bliss without any sort of sickness, pain or sadness. God will be pleased with them and they will be pleased with Him. Even the lowest in rank among the dwellers of Paradise will have many times the like of this world and will have whatever they desire.
