As regards the misconception about the prophet's, grave referring to its existence in the mosque as apostasy and infidelity. The scholars have discussed this issue and debuked all specious arguments related to it. We will quote the fatwas of scholars, which discuss the matter in detail among which is:
1 – Fatwa permanent committee for Islamic Research and Ifta' which goes thus:
The prophet (PBUH) laid the foundation of his mosque based on piety and Allah's good pleasure. The prophet (PBUH) was not buried there after his death, rather he was buried in the room of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) when Abu Bakr died, he was buried with him in the same room, and so was Umar (may Allah be pleased with them).
This room was not inside the mosque or in the direction of its Qiblah, but to the left side of the praying place, outside the mosque. It did not become part of the mosque when Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) expanded the prophet mosque, but it was incorporated into it after the time of the rightly guided caliphs.
Therefore, Salaah there is permissible, it is even more than a thousand Salaah elsewhere, except in Al-Masjid Al-Haram which is not like those mosques that have been established over graves or in which people were later buried, as Salaah is prohibited in them (vol.1/ 410)
It equally said, as for the prophet mosque it was not built on graves, rather the three graves were outside the mosque and in Aisha's room, but when Al-Waleed Ibn Abdul Malik expanded the mosque he incorporated the room into the mosque but demarcated it with walls surrounding it in all directions (vol.1/420&421).
2 – Sheik Abdul Azeez Ibn Baz also has a series of discussion on the topic, among his statements is this :
In response to unfounded arguments put forward by some Ignorant concerning the graves of the prophet and his two friends (may Allah be pleased with them) in the prophet mosque, the prophet (peace be upon him) was buried in his house but not in the mosque and his two friends.
But when Al-waleed Ibn Abdul malik Ibn Marwan expanded the mosque he included the house in the mosque, due to expansion, for which he was wrong and should have left the house out of the mosque in order not be used as justification for the Ignorant of their actions. Scholars condemned it and should never be as a justification.
This should not be regarded as part of building mosques over graves or regarding the graves as mosques, because it is a separate house incorporated into the mosque for the purpose of expansion. This is categorized like separate grave in front of the mosque which has no harm; likewise the prophet's grave was separated from the mosque with wall and a bar.
It is obligatory upon Muslim to explain this issue to his brethren in order not to fall into error in this regard. (Majmuu' fatawa vol 13/235,238,240 &242) (Majallatu-l- buhuth al- islamiyyah vol.50 pg 83)
