Satan is the source of all evils and sins. He is the leader to destruction in this world and the hereafter, and the flag bearer at all place and at all times calling people to disbelief. So, is there wisdom in his creation and what is the wisdom behind it?
Ibn Qayim answered this question saying: “there are wisdoms in the creation of iblees and his soldiers which no one knows the details except Allah…” Shifaa-al-‘aleel, pg 322.
These include the following:
1- Striving against satan and his aids completes the level of servitude: the servitude of the Prophets and allies of Allah are completed with their strive against the enemy of Allah and his group. Likewise as they seek refuge with Allah against them and turn to Him to protect them from their evil and deceit a lot of benefits in this world and hereafter are actualized.
2- Fear of the servants of Allah from sins: the angels and believers fear from their sins after witnessing the condition of iblees, and his fall from the degree of angels to that of devils. No doubt that when the angels witnessed that they gained additional servitude, submission, and fear as is the case of the slaves of a king when they witness him humiliate one of them in their presence, they become more afraid and careful.
3- Allah made him a lesson to others: Allah made him a lesson to whoever disobeys His commands and insists on committing sin just as He made the sin of the father of mankind a lesson to whoever disobeys Him, then repents and returns to his Lord. Thus, the fathers of mankind and jinkind were tried with sin and Allah made of them a lesson to whoever persists in committing sin and the other a lesson to whoever commits sin and then repent.
4- Allah made him a test and trial to His servants: Among the wisdom behind the creation of iblees is that Allah made him test to His servants so that the evil ones among them will become distinct from the good ones because Allah created mankind from the earth which consist of hard, easy, good and bad hence these characteristics must manifest in them. Abi Musa narrated that I heard the messenger of Allah saying: “Allah the most high created Adam from a handful he took from all of the earth. So the children of Adam came in accordance to the earth, some of them came red, some white, some black, some easy, some hard, some clean and some filthy” reported by Ahmad, Tirmidhee and Abu Dawood.
So whatever is in the original material is bound to be in the product from it. thus, there must be a means of bringing it out and satan is the criterion for differentiating the good from the evil just as the Prophets and messengers for that also. Allah the most high said: “Allah would not leave the believers in that [state] you are in [presently] until He separates the evil from the good.” (Q3:V179). So, He sent His messengers to both mankind and jinkind and among them are the good and the evil. It also the wisdom of Allah that He gathers them together in this world of trial so that when they move to the permanent world He will separate them and put each in a separate abode.
5- Showing His complete capacity to create opposites: Among these wisdom is to show His complete capacity to create opposites, like Jibreel and and angels, and iblees and his fellow satans. That is among the greatest signs of His abilities, will and power because He is the creator of opposites like the heavens and the earth, light and darkness, paradise and Hell, water and fire, hot and cold, good and bad.
6- The beauty of anything manifests with its opposite
7- A trial to actualize gratitude: Among the wisdom is that Allah loves that His servants show true gratitude to Him and no doubt that the friends and allies of Allah have shown because of the presence of iblees, the enemy of Allah, and his trial all kinds of gratitude which wouldn’t have been so without iblees. How much was Adam’s gratitude while he was in paradise before his eviction compared to his gratitude to Allah after he had been tried by his enemy, then Allah chose him and forgave him.
8- In the creation of iblees is establishment of servitude: among the wisdom is that love, turning to Allah, trust, and patience and the likes are the most beloved forms of servitude to Allah and this servitude can only be achieved by striving for Allah’s sake, and preferring His love to every other thing. Thus, in the creation of iblees and his battalion strengthening of servitude to Allah.
9- It exposes the signs of Allah and the wonders of His abilities: Among these wisdom is that in the creation of one who opposes His messengers and belies them shows the completeness of His signs and the wonders of His abilities which are more beloved to Him and more beneficial to His friends and allies. Like the sign of the flood, stick, hand, division of the sea, throwing of Prophet Ibraheem into fire and many other signs and proofs of His ability, knowledge, and wisdom.
