The Sunnah of Du’a Al-jaami'

The servant’s needs from his Lord are indeed enormous. If the servant will persist in raising his hands to Allah forever his requests will not finish; for in this world, we have a lot of things that require guidance and success from Allah. Be it in our acts of worship, houses, works, health, children, wealth, and relationships. The same can be said of our loved ones. We wish them good in their houses, works and and all aspects of their lives. These loved ones also have relatives, friends and neighbors. We also wish our Ummah good in general and all these is in this world, as for our needs in the hereafter, they are even greater. The agony of the hereafter, starting from the grave passing through resurrection, the scale of deeds, passing on the sirat and ending up in paradise or hell, all these require supplication. If the servant pounders over his affairs and that of his family, he will discover that words, no matter how plenty, cannot express all his needs from the Lord of creation. Thus, it is as a result of this that the prophetic tradition came to our rescue. That is the tradition of supplicating with encompassing words. This is a specific supplication which the prophet used and it covers all we need in this world and the hereafter. Among them is the hadith reported by Ibn Majaa and authenticated by Albany from Aisha-May Allah be pleased with her- that the Prophet-peace be upon him- taught her this supplication: “ O Allah I ask you for all that is good in this world and the hereafter, what I know and what I do not know, O Allah I seek refuge with you from all evils, in this world and the hereafter, what I know and what I do not know, O Allah I ask you for the good that your slave and prophet has asked you for and I seek refuge with you from the evil from which your slave and prophet has sought refuge. O Allah I ask you for paradise and for that which brings one closer to it in word and in deed, and I seek refuge with you from hell and from that which brings one closer to it in word and in deed, and I ask you to make every decree that you decree concerning me good”
So, let us memorize this amazing and encompassing supplication. It is worthy that the supplication which the Prophet was keen to teach Mother of the believers, Aisha to be of this nature.
