The best way to say the qunut is to start by giving glory to Allah and praising Him, and to invoke the blessings of Allah upon the Prophet-peace be upon him, thereafter he should make his supplication. This is closer to acceptance than ordinary supplication without giving glory to Allah and praising Him. The proof for this is the hadith reported by At-Tirmidhee and Abu Dawud from Fudala bin Ubayd-may Allah be pleased with him-he said: the Prophet heard a man supplicating in his prayers without invoking blessings upon the Prophet so he said: “ he has hastened then he called him said to him: when one of you supplicates let him start by glorifying Allah and praising Him, then he should invoke blessings upon the Prophet, then he should ask Allah whatever he wants after that.”
Also the hadith of the Prophet teaching his grandson, Hasan bin Ali that he should say in the qunut of witr: O Allah guide me among those whom you have guided… to the end of the hadith which is authentic but without the addition of qunut and explained before. Therefore it is not correct to use it as a proof for starting supplication without glorifying Allah. Ibn Qayim said: “what is recommended in supplication is for the one supplicating to start by glorifying and praising Allah before presenting his needs as in the hadith of Fudala bin Ubayd” this hadith also shows that invoking blessing upon the prophet is one of the means of getting ones supplication accepted. That was why Ubay bin Ka’b used to invoke blessings upon the prophet in his qunut while leading the companions in prayer as reported by ibn Khuzaima.
Raising the hands in the qunut
As for raising the hands in qunut, Imam Al-Auzaa’ee and a number of scholars prohibited it to the extent that Imam Zuhri said: people do not raise hands in witr during Ramadan”
Another group of scholars who are the majority are of the opinion that it is recommended because basically, raising hands in praying is permissible.
Abu Dawud said: I heard Ahmad being asked whether it is permissible to raise hands in the qunut and he replied yes. Abu Dawud said: I saw Ahmad raising s hands in qunut. Bukhari also mentioned that ibn umar used to raise his hands in qunut. It was also mentioned that Ibn Mas’ud used to recite suratul Ikhlaas in the last unit of witr prayer then raise his hands in qunut.
Albaihaqee also said: raising the hands in qunut was the practice of a number of the companions of the prophet.
As for wiping the face with the hands after supplications, there is no authentic hadith from the Prophet and his companions concerning it, neither in qunut nor any other situation, neither inside the prayers nor outside it. Some members of the public have taken that as a custom which is wrong, while some are accustomed to raising the hands after nawafil prayers and wiping the face with it without supplications, this is even worse. The sunnah of the Prophet is to avoid wiping the face completely in prayers and outside it. Imam Abu Dawud said: “I heard Ahmad being asked about wiping the face after supplication and he replied: I have never heard of it” he also once said: “I have never heard of any hadith concerning it”. Abu Dawud said: I observed that Ahmad does not do it. Imam Malik was also asked concerning a man who wipes his face after supplication so he prohibited it and said: I do not know it.
Al-hafiz Al-baihaqee said: I do not know of any one among the pious predecessors who raises his hands in the supplication of qunut, even though it was reported that some of them did it in supplications outside the prayers. There is a weak hadith reported from the Prophet concerning it which some of them use as evidence for it outside the prayers but as for doing it inside the prayers, no authentic narration on it unlike the raising of the hands in supplication during prayers. May Allah guide us.
