Fasting is considered one of the greatest acts of worship in Islam and the saying of Allah concerning fasting is enough to proof this. Albukhari narrated from Abu Huraira-may Allah be pleased with him- that the Prophet-peace be upon him said: “Allah-the Most high said: fasting is for me and I will be the one to give its reward, the person fasting leaves his desires, food and drink because of me”. This was why one of the sunnah of the Prophet-peace be upon- him was to observe a lot supererogatory fast outside the month of Ramadan and it was his sunnah to also observe more fasting in some months than others, and he fasted in shaban more than any other month. Muslim narrated from Aisha-may Allah be pleased with her- that she said: “the Prophet never fasted in other months more than he fasted in shaban”.
Muslim also narrated that from Abi salama that he said: I asked Aisha-may Allah be pleased with her- about the fasting of the Prophet-peace be upon him- and she said: “he used to fast till we would say he has fasted for too long, and he used to leave fasting till we would say he has left fasting for too long, and I have seen him fasting in any other month more than he fasts in shaban, he used to fast all of shaban, and he used to fast shaban except few days.”
Tirmidhy narrated from Umu salama-may Allah be pleased with him- that: I have seen the Prophet-peace be upon him- fasting two consecutive months except shaban and Ramadan.” (Albany says the hadith is authentic)
The Prophet does not fast the whole of shaban. However, because he fasts most of the days of shaban, Ummu salama considered him as fasting the whole of shaban or may be the days of the prophet’s fast coincides with his days with her so she thought he fasted all the month. But the prophet never completed the fast of any month other than Ramadan. Albukhari narrated from Aisha that she said: “I have never seen the Prophet completing any month with fasting other than Ramadan…”
So let us fast a lot in this blessed month and let us use it to prepare ourselves for the month of Ramadan.
