She is Zainab bint Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdulmutalib bin Haashim Al-Qurashiyya Al-Haashimiyya. Her father is Muhammad, the messenger of Allah-peace be upon him, and her mother is the Mother of the believers, Khadija bint Khuwailid Al-Asadiyya Al-Qurashiyya-May Allah be pleased with her. She is the eldest of the children of the Prophet- peace be upon him. She was born in makka ten years before prophet hood. When she attained the age of marriage-women were usually married off below ten- her maternal aunty, Haala bint Khuwailid sought her hand in marriage for her son, Abi Al-‘ass bin Ar-Rabee’ Al-‘abshamee Al-Qurashee who was one of the few men of wealth, trust and trade. So, the prophet married her to him and that was before prophet hood. When the Prophet was anointed, Zainab accepted Islam but her husband remained a pagan. Her father in-law loved her and honored her and she had always reciprocated.
She had two children for her husband, Ali and Umaama who was later married by Ali bin Abi Talib after the death of his wife Fatima-May Allah be pleased with her. Zainab was not among those placed under economic sanction among the family of Abu Talib and her people from Bani Hashim but news of their situation had always reached her and she was pained by it. When the sanction ended her mother died and she felt serious grief, then the Prophet migrated to Medina along with her two sisters, Fatima and Ummul kuthum but she remained in makka with her husband because Islam had not decreed their separation yet. In the second year after migration, the battle of Badr took place between the Muslims and the Quraish. Her father and some of her relatives were among the Muslims while her husband was among the Quraish. Thus, she was looking at the battle from two different sides. It is either she becomes an orphan or a widow. Then came the news of the victory of the Muslims and the death of some great men of Quraish, and the capture of some of their men including her husband. When the Quraish sent money as redemption for their men in captivity, Zainab also sent her husband’s brother ‘Amr bin Ar-Rabee’ with some money together with her necklace which she received from her mother as wedding gift as ransom for her husband. When the Prophet saw the necklace he felt serious pity for her and he said to his companions: “if you would release her captive and return her money back to her please do”. So they said yes and granted his request. Then the Prophet called Abu Al-‘ass and made him promise to send Zainab to him in Madina as soon as possible. When Abu Al-‘ass got to Makka, the first thing he did was to prepare Zainab for the journey to Madina escorted by Zaid bin Haritha and a man from the Ansaar, both men were sent by the Prophet for this purpose. Her husband’s brother, Kinana bin Ar-Rabee’ also followed them but they were intercepted by some people from the Quraish among whom was Hubaar bin Aswad Al-Asadee. They were nursing ill-feelings as a result of their defeat during the battle of Badr, so they tried to stop them and in the process Zainab fell from her camel. She was four months pregnant and so had miscarriage as a result of that. Kinana returned her to her husband to look after her and after some days she was able to travel to Madina in company of the two men sent by the prophet to live with her father far away from her husband.
By the end of the sixth year after hijra, her husband Abu-Al’ass went out on a business trade to Shaam, and on his way back close to Madina, he met a battalion of soldiers of the Prophet under the commandership of Zaid bin Haritha and with him was one hundred and seventy men. So, Abu-Al’ass ran in the darkness and hide near the house of Zainab and sought for her protection. When the Prophet went out for the fajr prayer and made the takbeer, Zainab shouted: O people I have granted protection to Abu-Al’ass bin Ar-Rabee’. When the Prophet finished the prayers, he turned to the people and said: did you hear what I heard? They said yes. He said: I swear by the one in whose Hands is the life of Muhammad; I do not know anything about this until I heard what you heard. Then he went to his daughter and said to her: “O my daughter, honor him but do not allow him to touch you because you are not permissible for him as long as he remains a pagan. From that day Abu-Al’ass accepted Islam then he asked for permission from the Prophet to go to makka to return people’s rights with him and then went back to Madina in the Month of Muharram in the seventh year after migration. The Prophet returned Zainab to him as his wife without renewing the marriage and in some narrations with a new marriage contract. After a year, Zainab became ill and she died from the illness. The Prophet led her funeral prayer and she was buried in the grave yard of Baqee. May Allah be pleased with her and have mercy on her.
