Hafsah bint Umar bin Khattaab was born five years before the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) became a prophet. She was six years older than her brother Abdullah. She was beautiful and a pious woman.
She got married to Khunais ibn Hudhafah Ibn Qays as-Sahami (may Allah be pleased with him) who was from Quraish.
He was a part of the two emigrations (Abyssinia and Madinah). He fought in Badr and Uhud. In the latter battle he was fatally wounded and died shortly thereafter in madinah. Hafsah was 18 years old by that time.
Her Marriage to the Prophet
When Hafsah became a widow it worried and distressed ‘Umar. One day he walked to the house of Aboo (http://idealmuslimah.com/component/glossary/Definition-of-Arabic-Terms-1/A/Aboo-128/) Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and offered his daughter in marriage to him. Aboo Bakr remained silent and did not say a word. ‘Umar left his house quite and upset and confused.
He then went to ‘Uthmaan and thought that since the Prophet’s daughter Ruqayyah (http://idealmuslimah.com/personalities/sahaabiyaat/1520-ruqayyah-the-lady-of-the-two-migrations), who was ‘Uthmaan’s wife, had passed away, he would probably respond favorably. But 'Uthmaan apologized by saying, "I think I would not like to marry at the present time. This was because ‘Uthmaan was still not over the death of his beloved wife. Umar, clearly upset, left and this was when the Prophet (peace be upon him) saw him and asked him as to why he looked so worried. Umar informed him of what had happened and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Hafsah shall marry someone who is better than 'Uthmaan and 'Uthmaan shall marry someone who is better than Hafsah." ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) left the Prophet’s company relieved. When ‘Umar met Aboo Bakr he told him about what the Prophet (peace be upon him) had said. Aboo Bakr smiled and said,
"I have heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) mentioning Hafsah. But I did not want to reveal his secret. If he had not shown his interest in marrying her, I would have married her. So do not bear any grudge against me."
'Uthman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), clearly sad and distressed over his wife’s death. He said to the Prophet (peace be upon him),
"My marriage relationship with you has come to an end with the death of Ruqayyah, 0 Messenger of Allah!"
The noble Messenger (peace be upon him) sympathized with him and then said, "I have given you her sister, Umm Kulthoom in marriage. If I had ten daughters I would have given them to you in marriage (one after the other)."
All people in Madinah were pleased with the Prophet's (peace be upon him) marriage to Hafsah bint Umar (May Allah be please with him). It was contracted in the month of Sha'ban in the 3rd year of Hijrah. They blessed the marriage of Uthman to Umm Kulthum bint Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the month of Jumad al-Akhirah in the same year as well.
Thus, Hafsah (May Allah be please with her) joined the rank of the Prophet (peace be upon him)'s pure wives, mothers of the faithful who were by then, Sawdah and A'isha (May Allah be please with them), and became a member of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) household.
Among the other wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him), A'isha (May Allah be please with her) was the most intimate and closest one to Hafsah (May Allah be please with her). In fact it was as if both were real sisters! This is because they always agreed and never disagreed. It is Hafsah and A'isha (May Allah be please with her) who backed up each other against the Prophet (peace be upon him) in a domestic intrigue which is mentioned in the Qur'an (Q66:V4).
A Pious Woman
Hafsah (may Allah be pleased wih her) was a devote worshipper. She was very pious, fasted during the day and prayed at night.
Ibn Sa'd recorded that the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) divorced Hafsah once and then took her back because the Angel Gabriel said to him,
"Take Hafsah back, for she frequently fasts and prays in the night and she is your wife in Paradise."
Humayd ibn Anas narrated that,
"The Prophet (Peace be upon him) divorced Hafsah and he was thereafter commanded to take her back, and he did so."
After this, Hafsah was keen never to annoy the Prophet (Peace be upon him) again until he died.
Hafsah seemed to be much attached and close to her father who used to consult her matters relating to women. Once he noticed a woman reciting poetry about her husband who was away on jihad.
Umar was disturbed, and asked Hafsah how long a woman may remain without her husband. She said six months, upon which Umar issued a decree to all of his commanders to relieve every warrior after every six months.
The Custodian of the Book of Allah
Angel Gabriel described her to the Prophet (sallallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) as frequently performing (voluntary) fasting and night prayers, and that she was to be one of his wives in Paradise. Also, unlike other men and women at that time, she could read and write. This was quality which was very rare among womenfolk at that time, even among the men. When the Prophet (Peace be upon him) died and Abu Bakr (May Allah be pleased with him) succeeded him, it was Hafsah who was chosen to keep the first copy of the Noble Qur'an.
She continued worshipping Allah (Ta'ala) devoutly, fasting, praying, and keeping the copy of the Muslims constitution, the immortal miracle and the source of legislation and belief.
SubhaanAllah (http://idealmuslimah.com/component/glossary/Definition-of-Arabic-Terms-1/S/SubhaanAllah-51/), she was entrusted with the most honorable and greatest thing this world can contain, the words of Allah. She was given this duty because she was worthy and respected by the Companions. When ‘Uthmaan (may Allah be pleased with him) decided to compile the Qur’aan into a single book form, the verses which were with Hafsah were considered primary resources to be relied upon when undertaking this great and momentous task.
She was thus known as being the custodian of the Book of Allah. She preserved the Qur'aan in her heart, as well as in her house. Whenever we open a copy of the Qur'aan and before we begin to read it, we should remember the name of Hafsah, Ummul-Mu’mineen and her preservation of this Divine Book.
When her father the caliph of the Muslims (Umar ibn Al-Khattab) felt he was about to die after he was stabbed by Abu Lu'Lu'a the Zoroastrian in the month of Dhul-Hijjah 23 AH, Hafsah was the guard of what he left of inheritance.
Hafsah took custody of all his important documents including his copy of the mushaf which was compiled during the time of Abu Bakr's caliphate.
Hafsah passed away during the reign of Mu'awiyyah ibn Sufyan's (May Allah be please with him) at the beginning of the 44 A.H. May Allah SWT shower His Mercy and Blessings upon her always, Ameen.
