1. In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.
This chapter was called the opening because the glorious Qur'an is usually opened with it. The chapter is also called mathaani meaning the repeated because it is recited in each unit of the prayer, it also has other names. I begin the recitation of the Qur'an in the name of Allah, seeking His assistance. The word Allah is the proper name of the Lord, the only one worthy of worship. It is the most specific among the names of Allah and none is to be called by it. The Most Beneficent, the one whose mercy encompasses the entire creation. The Most Merciful with the believer. These two names- Most Beneficent and Most Merciful- are among the beautiful names of Allah and they both establish the attribute of mercy to Allah in a manner that befits His Majesty.
2. All praises and thanks are due to Allah, the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).
This is a tribute to Almighty Allah with His attributes which are all attributes of perfection, and with His favors both open and hidden, in this world and the hereafter. Implied in this is a command to all His servants to praise Him because He is the most deserving of praise, he is the originator of all creations, the one who is in charge of all their affairs, the breeder of all creations with His favors, and the breeder of His allies with faith and good righteous deeds.
3. The Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.
The Most Beneficent; that is the one whose mercies encompasses all creations. The Most Merciful; that is with the believers. These two names are among the beautiful names of Allah.
4. The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)
He alone is the owner of the Day of Judgment which is also the day of reward for all deeds. The recitation of this verse by a Muslim in each unit of his prayers is a reminder to him of the Day of Judgment, and a motivation for him to prepare for it with good righteous deeds, and abstain from sins and evil deeds.
5. You (Alone) we worship, and You (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything).
We dedicate our worship to you alone and we seek your help alone in all our affairs. All matters are in your hands, no body possesses an atom of it. This verse is a proof that it is not permissible for a servant to direct anything among the various acts of worship such as supplication, calling for help, sacrifice, and tawaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba) to other than Allah alone. In it also is a cure for hearts against the disease of connection to other than Allah and also from the disease of show off, pride and arrogance.
6. Guide us to the Straight Way
Show and guide us to the straight path and establish us on it till we meet You, and that is Islam which is the clear path that leads to the pleasure of Allah and His paradise. And that is the path shown by the last of His messengers and prophets, Muhammad- peace be upon him. Hence, there is no way to eternal bliss for a servant except through his uprightness on this path.
7. The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger (such as the Jews), nor of those who went astray (such as the Christians).
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed your favors of the Prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs, the righteous. They are people of guidance and uprightness. And do not make us follow the path of those who have earned Your anger, those who knew the truth but did not work with it. They are the Jews and their types. As for those who went astray, they are those who were not guided as a result of their ignorance so they lost the path. They are the Christians and whoever follows their path.
In this supplication is a cure for the heart of a Muslim from the disease of denial, ignorance and misguidance. It is also a proof that the greatest favor is the favor of Islam. Thus, whoever knows better the truth and follows it better is more deserving of the straight path. And there is no doubt that the companions of Prophet Muhammad- peace be upon him are more deserving of that after the Prophets. Hence, this verse is also a proof of their virtue and their great position- may Allah be pleased with them.
It is recommended for the reciter in his prayers to say after reciting suratul fatiha “Aamin” which means O Allah answer my prayers. However, it is not a verse among suratul fatiha by the consensus of scholars and that is why it was unanimously agreed not to write it in the Mushaf.
